Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Requirements to Rent a Car?
Customers must meet the following requirements:

  • Meet the renting location’s age requirements: 25-65 years old.
  • Present a valid driver’s license that has been issued for over 3 years.
  • Present a major credit card in their name at the time of rental, with available credit. In addition to the anticipated cost of the rental, a security deposit will be required.

What are my Insurance Coverage Options?
While you are renting a vehicle, you are responsible for any damage/theft of the vehicle regardless of fault. We understand that this is a hefty financial responsibility to assume, here are a few ways to reduce your liability.

  1. Purchase Collision Damage Waiver from the Rental Car Company. Our CDW cost starts from $12 USD plus taxes and limits your liability to a deductible stated on your Rental Agreement ( As long no terms in the agreement are breached).
  2. Purchase Collision Damage Waiver from your Online Travel Agency (OTA Example Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz etc). When you purchase OTA CDW Coverage please print and bring the policy so we can verify your Coverage at the Rental Counter.
  3. Some Credit Cards (We Accept Visa and MasterCard) have Collision Damage Waiver as part of your FREE Benefits. To determine if your card has Coverage you can call the number at the back of the Credit Card and ask about Rental Car CDW. Ask for the Policy to be emailed to you and print and bring it so we can verify your Coverage at the Rental Counter.

What is the Fuel Return Policy?
All customers have 2 options for fuel charges, both starting with a full tank of fuel.

Pay at the time of rental:

  • This option allows a renter to pay for the full tank of gas at the time of rental and return the tank empty.
  • No refunds will be given for unused gas.
  • The total up front fuel charge reflected is an estimate based on current prices and the average tank size for the car class. This charge may change upon time of rental.

Pay upon return:

  • This option allows a renter to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas or pay XTRA at the end of the rental for gas used but not replaced.
  • Price per gallon / liter will be higher than local fuel prices.

What should I do in the event of an Accident/Damage to the Vehicle?
First, contact the police (999). Always complete an XTRA Accident/Incident Report when the car has been involved in an accident or damaged. Contact XTRA at 868-348-9137. Collect all relevant information from the other party(for eg. Vehicle Registration Number, Driver Name, Insurance Company, Policy Number, Certificate Number, etc.). Then contact the police station having jurisdiction to make a police report. If you are renting with a major credit card, you may want to contact their customer service department to determine if coverage is afforded through their collision program. You do not need to wait to receive our claim documents to report your claim to your personal insurance company and/or Credit Card Company.

The renter is responsible for any and all loss of or damage to the car resulting from any cause including but not limited to collision, rollover, theft, tire damage and vandalism, medical condition, flood, fire, hail or other acts of Nature. If you have accepted the XTRA CDW Coverage and there is no breach of contract violation, your responsibility for the damages may be limited to the deductable.

Additionally, if we have the other party’s contact information, we will pursue them and/or their insurance company for our damages if determined they were at fault. However, our pursuit of the other party does not absolve you from your contractual obligation with XTRA.

Other charges that could be incurred by the renter:

  • Loss of Use: as the renter, you are contractually liable for the loss of the specific vehicle rented as detailed in the rental contract. When our car is unavailable to be rented, XTRA is entitled to compensation for such loss.
  • Administrative Fee: XTRA is self-insured and the expense of processing claims is passed on only to the responsible parties involved. XTRA has a legal entitlement to return vehicles to pre-accident condition which includes the indirect damage of expenses related to administering a claim.

What Payment Options are Available?
XTRA offers several flexible payment options for customers including credit and debit card and cash.

Renting a Car with a Credit Card

A credit card must be presented with available credit, in the renter’s name for all rental transactions in Trinidad. The signature must match the name imprinted on the card and the signature on the car rental agreement.

Credit Cards accepted: Mastercard®, VISA®

Renting a Car with a Debit Card

Debit/Check cards are considered to be any non-credit card bearing the VISA or Mastercard® emblems.

At the Piarco airport location, debit card payments are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a credit card security deposit. The name and address shown on the renter’s driver’s license must match their current home address. Additional drivers are allowed for an additional fee (All Drivers MUST meet Age requirements, see car rental requirements).  At the time of rental, charges will be placed on the debit card which reduces the available funds in the account associated with the card used. Renter is responsible for any overdraft fees incurred.

Renting a Car with Cash

At the Piarco airport location, cash payments are only accepted at the time of rental if accompanied by a credit card security deposit.  For security reasons, many companies do not accept cash at any time.
